Questioner: Greetings to Acharya Ji. Acharya Ji, how should we raise our children? Please guide us.
Acharya Prashant: Since the last ten years, when I started speaking, I never had any dealings with very young children, just those of ten-twelve-eight years. These camps for children have started just three-four months ago. So this was something for me too that I had not paid attention to till now. This section of the population, children, I had not paid attention to them till now. Now in 2017, I am paying attention to them for And since I have started paying attention to these, all other things have been lagging behind. Because all the diseases that adults suffer from and which break out at the age of thirty-forty or sixty-seventy have their roots in childhood itself. Whatever has to happen to a child mentally, psychologically, has already happened by the age of seven-eight, by the age of ten, at the most by the age of fifteen-sixteen.
These children come to the camp, when I see them I shudder. I feel that three days are too less to do something. Now three-four camps have been held, so there are more than thirty-forty-fifty children.
I have met their parents. A healthy child is so rare. Whereas this is the whole spectrum of children from seven to seventeen years of age whom we meet in the camp. And all of them have been ruined by the school and the home environment.
You must have heard me speak about this institution called school, I have spoken very little about schools. This word school used to be missing from my radar. Now for the last few months, the word school has come up a lot, whenever I say something, the word school often comes up in it. These school people are big criminals and they are ruining, they are making this generation a Mickey Mouse.
Robotic, insensitive, deeply conditioned and very, very scared.
As are the children, so are their parents. It means that school has become a religion, school has taken the place of religion. Their life is going on as per the instructions of the school. Life has to be lived as per what is right, which we call Dharma, that which is right. Here, the life of the children and parents is going on as per the instructions of the school.
Just like cooking, once you have cooked a dish, if it gets spoiled then If this has happened then often the cook tries to correct it in some way - if the salt has become too much then you add lemon to it to reduce the salt.
Do you understand?
If something is burnt or something is damaged, you try to fix it by adding water to it and then exposing it to heat, or you do some trick with the microwave or something. But this repaired food never tastes the same as before, it is known that this is repaired food and it has been made in some way by beating it up.
Whatever efforts you have made, this whole mission, I have seen that it is a mission of repairing. Because today when we are dealing with the seventeen plus age group, then these are the people whose damage has already happened, later repair takes place in different ways – somewhere they are going to camps, somewhere they are doing something, there are all kinds of books also. Brother, who is reading the books? Even the books are being read by the mature class, right? The reader is someone who is twenty-five, someone who is fifty, only he is reading.
The damage is already being done and it is very important to arrest the damage before it happens otherwise it is just a patch up job. Just like when a piece of cloth gets torn, you put a patch on it. The patch will never do the whole job.
Do not allow any damage to occur; and any damage that occurs at this age is not covered (compensated)
You may be forty, you may be seventy, if you have not lived your childhood, then a big hole remains inside you and it does not fill. It does not fill. No matter how many books you read, you
Bharta. No matter how many books you read, you do something. You wanted to run on the field, you wanted to roll on the grass. Do you understand?
You wanted to take a bath naked in the open. All these things are what children or small animals usually do.
You did not get to do all that and when you were five or ten years old, you were put under the pressure that would have been put on a twenty-five year old. The damage is so deep that a person spends his entire life trying to improve, but there is no improvement, absolutely no improvement.
In reality, all spirituality is nothing but the healing of a bad childhood. For me, this year 2017 has been dedicated to children. I am becoming a child specialist. I mean that the depths of spirituality and the Upanishads are now being understood. The Upanishads are also needed because childhood is ruined. If childhood is not ruined, there will not be much need for the Upanishads.
The three days of children's camp become painful for me. I have to go there every month, and it becomes painful when I see their condition. The world is desperately in need of some wise parenting, desperately. Nothing else can save us.
The world. The world seriously needs some mothers and fathers who are Buddha-like. (The world seriously needs some wise parents, no one else can save the world. The world seriously needs some mothers and fathers who are Buddha-like.) And I am nothing. It's a very closed matter.
Q: Acharya Ji, how can we protect children from all these influences?
For that you will have to keep the home environment very good. And as I said, at an early age you will have to introduce him to spiritual literature that is appropriate for his age.
If he is eight or ten now, then it is high time that he gets introduced to the basics, like Kabir's simple couplets or Aesop's stories. His initial introduction to these should happen now. If he is not introduced, then it will be harmful. Because this is his defense. Arrows are coming at him from every direction, hundreds of them are hitting him every day.
And you know that out of those hundred, one or two are yours too which you have used unknowingly. Well, you don't want it, It happens unintentionally many times. You may try to save a lot of things but you do miss out on one or two things. A child is getting hit by a hundred arrows every day, at this time he needs a shield, he needs defense. And there is no other defense except spirituality.
